First of the Last
“Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.” — Robert Brault

The Obstacle
We’re in a rush to get it over.
It seems like everything takes forever.
We take for granted the things that are in front of us and don’t take the time to enjoy them, even when they might be our last.
The Gift And Opportunity
We know life goes fast, even when things seem to take forever.
We can slow down the things that go fast by appreciating what we have when we have it.
We can remember that things don’t last forever and that we should appreciate them and show gratitude while they’re here for the brief time they’re in our lives.
Take notice of what’s here now.
Don’t expect it will last forever, and don’t be in a rush for it to be over.
The Practice Of Self-Mastery
• Notice what’s here now
• Appreciate what we have
• Show gratitude while it’s here
• Don’t be in a rush for it to be over
CHEAT CODE: NOTICE → APPRECIATE → FIND THE GOOD → DON’T RUSH
The Why
Today is the first day of the last year of elementary school for my son.
I remember the strange feeling of the first day of school.
The mixed emotions of anxiety, excitement, and change.
The novelty of an old school that looked new, a fresh class, a new teacher, a different setting, different friends, and a change in the schedule from summer break.
As a kid, I remember wanting everything to come faster: the end of the school day, the school year, Christmas break, my next birthday, my driver’s license, graduation, and college.
Always in a rush.
Even as I’m older, I seem to rush from one thing to the next.
But I’m trying to get better at really slowing down and taking the time for what’s here and now, even in the things that aren’t my choice.
Watching my son go off for his first day of his last year is a good reminder that we don’t get to choose where we are.
There’s plenty to enjoy, so I remind myself; don’t be in a rush.
