Back In The Rhythm

“The ability to simplify means to eliminate the unnecessary so that the necessary may speak.” — Hans Hofmann

The Obstacle

Times in life change. Obligations, responsibilities, and tasks change, but the number of hours in a day is not negotiable.
We can find ourselves in periods when we have more time than we know what to do with, and other times when there simply aren't enough hours in the day to get everything done.
It can be difficult to maintain a consistent schedule when life becomes demanding and there is little room for flexibility. During these times, we can become stressed, anxious, and fatigued by everything that remains undone or that we don't have time to address.
We can try to force more work into an already full schedule, only to find that the quality of that work suffers or that we're taking time away from the things in our lives that actually matter.
It's difficult to maintain balance when there isn't enough time.

The Gift and Opportunity

Even during busy times, we generally have the ability to prioritize.
Some storms last longer than others, and sometimes sacrifices need to be made when the seas are rough.
We can take an audit of what we're doing in life, determine what is essential, and let go of what isn't.
When we try to do too much, the things that actually need our attention often don't receive the time, energy, and focus they deserve.
We can pare down to the essentials, weather the storm, and direct our energy and attention toward what matters most without carrying the additional stress of everything else.

The Practice of Self-Mastery

• Audit our obligations and commitments
• Identify what is essential and what can wait
• Remove what doesn't fit right now
• Focus on doing what matters well
CHEAT CODE: AUDIT → IDENTIFY → REMOVE → FOCUS

The Why

For those of you who follow these journals, this is the first one in a long time.
My life got extraordinarily busy over the last month or so with all the obligations of work, home life, sports, and kids.
Something had to give, and you guessed it, it was the journal.
I simply didn't have an additional hour or so each day to dedicate to writing and sharing. I was still doing the work behind the scenes, but I wasn't journaling on it and obviously wasn't sharing it.
What was important to me during this time was enjoying the people I was with and being present for the activities and responsibilities in front of me.
Each kid had three or more sports teams they were playing on, cabins needed to be shut down, offices needed to be built, and life needed to be lived.
Something had to give.
Rather than trying to do more and doing those things at a level below what I wanted, I decided to pare down, focus on the essentials, and be present with my family and the activities I was involved in.
Sometimes we have to sacrifice things in life that we'd rather not give up because other things matter more at that moment.
I hope I'm back in the rhythm for a while. I hope you continue to find these journals useful, and I hope I continue to find the time to journal and share.
