Touch Shift
“Return to thy sober senses and call thyself back.” — Marcus Aurelius

The Obstacle
We stay locked in all day on what's in front of us, stuck in our left brain analyzing, rationalizing, and computing.
A constant deluge of information, screens, calls, and distractions keeps us from remembering that we are a body as well as a mind.
We can get caught focused in, staring, thinking, and doing only what our eyes are trained on.
It's easy to get pulled in and never escape the constant demands of an urgent life.
The Gift and Opportunity
While we may have demands and screens and technology may beckon our constant attention, we can break free at any time.
We forget that we have other senses and ways to escape a technological reality.
We can simply feel what is around us.
We can touch the objects around us, parts of our own body, or anything within reach. We can explore the different temperatures, textures, and moisture around us.
When we put all of our attention into feeling, we can escape from the demands of our data driven life.
The Practice of Self-Mastery
• Close our eyes
• Reach out
• Feel what's around us
• Return recalibrated
CHEAT CODE: CLOSE → REACH → FEEL → RETURN
The Why
Most of my day, after the kids are dropped off for school and until they come home, is spent in front of a computer screen, writing, reading, speaking, coaching, emailing, texting, and refining.
I can check out of my physical body for far too long and disappear into the recesses of my analytical brain.
We're not meant to stay there all day, every day.
I can get a quick recess every now and then, for a few seconds or a few minutes, just by reaching out and feeling something.
I can close my eyes and use my fingers or feet to explore my surroundings and escape what my eyes and data brain demand of me.
When I do this, it's a quick reset that helps me refocus, calm down, release stress, and get back on track.
A short break is a shortcut back to recalibrated attention.
