The Hunger of More

"A thatched roof once covered free men; under marble and gold dwells slavery" - Seneca

The Obstacle

The hunger of more is never satisfied.
It is a road that has no end.

It wants more of what we don’t have.
It wants better versions of the things already have.
Always on to the next thing.

It doesn’t rest
Or allow us peace.
It runs in constant competition
With what others have
What we are lacking
Devouring.

The cruelest trick it plays
The more we want
The less present we are
With what we have,
Who we’re with,
What we’re doing.

We are unable to be
We must do…
More.

The Gift and Opportunity

Look around you.
Do you need more?
Is what you have enough?
Would you die
Or be less happy
If you didn’t get more?

Once you had enough
What has more ever done for you?

When you get more
How how long does the happiness last?

We don’t need more.
We have everything we need right now.

Our ancestors
Living under thatched roofs with dirt floors
Had all they needed
They were a connected people
Free from the wants of excess.
Free.

We’ve become slaves to the pursuit of more.

We could have more of what matters.
Time spent with the ones we love
Experiences
Knowledge
Skills
Connection.

More happiness, being present where we are.
More enjoyment out of the things we already have.

Take a long moment.
Think for a moment of your greatest memories
The times you were happiest.
What you were doing
Where you were
Who you were with.

Seek more of that.

The Practice of Self-Mastery

  • Notice the hunger of more

  • Ask if that will make a happy memory

  • Return to what is already here

  • Seek more of what matters

CHEAT CODE: NOTICE THE HUNGER → QUESTION THE NEED → RETURN TO THE PRESENT
