Stress The Guess

“We suffer more often in imagination than in reality” — Seneca
The Obstacle
We guess
How things are going to go
The outcome
Intentions
Motives.
These presumptions lead with energy we do not intend.
We enter with assumptions that make us frustrated
Angry
Defensive
Blaming
Guilty
Resentful.
It is difficult to get to the truth
Resolve conflict
Perform well
Or reach a positive outcome
With a negative posture.
The Gift and Opportunity
We know people often get us wrong
They misinterpret what we are saying
Our actions
Thinking
Attitude
Intentions
Yet we do the same.
We can be on the lookout
Before we engage
Understand that our assumptions
May not be correct
And discard them
Start from a position of nothing
Seek to understand
Explore before judging.
From here we can find truth
Understanding
Resolution.
The Practice of Self-Mastery
• Notice the story you are telling yourself
• Discard assumptions and guesses
• Seek to understand before judging
• Explore before deciding
CHEAT CODE: NOTICE → DISCARD THE STORY → UNDERSTAND → EXPLORE → RESOLVE
The Why
There are times where the start of something is a struggle and people do not show up like we thought they would.
I make assumptions about why people do what they door why they do not show up when they are supposed to.
When I am able to recognize that thought and release it, I can understand and explore the real why.
It usually turns out that the story I am telling myself does not match the story of reality
Or their thoughts and intentions.
I am able to have better conversations, not rooted in frustration or hostility.
