Choose hard

The Obstacle
Life provides choices from the time we wake up until we go to sleep. There are many things we choose or choose not to do that mostly go unrecognized. Little things.
It’s easy to skip things we should do, look the other way, not do the right thing, not finish or start the job, and let things accumulate.
It’s easy to go on autopilot and cruise from one thing to the next mindlessly, without conviction, intention, attention, or purpose.
When we do this, our life can slip into disorder. How we do one thing has an influence on how we do all things.
When we overlook the little things, it reflects our soul. Who we are. How we operate. What we value. And how we value ourselves and others.
Choose easy or choose hard.
The Gift And Opportunity
Each day presents us many choices, small and large, from the time we wake up to the time we go to sleep.
We can choose to do the harder thing. Choose to make the bed. Put the dishes away. Clean up after ourselves. Make sure we present well. Get that walk in. Work out. Proofread the email. Put the finishing touches on.
We can make sure that all things we do, big and little, are a reflection of who we are.
Showing to ourselves that we care. That we’re willing to do what should be done and do it right.
Paradoxically, the hard way is almost always the short way. The easy way will have us doing it again, backtracking, fixing mistakes, or spending a lot of time worrying about the things we avoided that have now accumulated into a large mess.
Choose the hard way and do what needs to be done without complaint or need for recognition.
The Practice Of Self-Mastery
• Notice the choice
• Choose the harder thing
• Do it with care
• Live what you value
CHEAT CODE: NOTICE → CHOOSE HARD → DO IT WITH CARE → LIVE WHAT YOU VALUE
The Why
If you read the last post, you know that I had to choose what I was and wasn’t going to do over the weekend because of family in town and it was my son’s birthday. Things had to be sacrificed and put off.
When Monday came, I had many tasks waiting for me.
I had to choose how I was going to do them. What I was going to ignore that day. What I was tempted to put half an effort into.
Was I going to make that bed that day? Get a workout in? Run? Eat well? Take care of myself? Proofread those emails? Be present?
Was I going to take the little bit of extra time to make sure that everything was good enough without avoiding or ignoring?
Each decision compounds on the next.
I choose to do the hard things as they come. To do things the hard way and not look the other way when something needs to be done.
Because I know it’ll be waiting for me or I’ll have to do it again.
A little bit of discipline up front saves me work down the road and helps me better live the values that I believe.
Hard way or easy way…? Choose.
