Shouting at the World

“Do not seek for things to happen the way you want them to rather wish that what happens happen the way it happens then you will be happy" — Epictetus

The Obstacle

Life seldom goes as planned.

Things get in the way no matter what we’re doing.

What should be easy turns out to be a struggle.

Circumstances tend to disappoint and frustrate us by not bending to our will or cooperating.

People do not behave as we wish they would or think they should.

Our days can be filled with anger, anxiety, and frustration because the world does not cooperate or bend to our will.

The Gift And Opportunity

Each struggle presents opportunity.

Even when it seems meaninglessly frustrating, there’s a chance to learn something, even if that something is simply patience.

When projects don’t go as planned, we can slow down, take a better look, and plan for the unseen.

We can get creative in different ways to approach the problem that we may not have thought of.

We can bring others in to fill our gap of skill, knowledge, or time.

When people frustrate us, we can understand that, oftentimes, it’s our perception or lack of curiosity.

We can use that to better understand or explore where they’re coming from.

We can use their view of the world or the circumstance to create a different way to move forward than we may have thought of.

We can stop being mad at the universe for not bending to our will.

The Practice Of Self-Mastery

• Notice the frustration

• Stop shouting at the world

• Slow down and look again

• Find the opportunity

CHEAT CODE: NOTICE → STOP SHOUTING → SLOW DOWN → FIND THE OPPORTUNITY

The Why

It seems no matter what I do, the universe has other plans.

I’m trying to finish a wall in my basement, and there’s always one more thing to do.

Building a wall is simple, but getting it right so that it doesn’t transmit vibrations or sound requires a lot of detail.

Every gap and hole must be filled with foam, wood, or caulk, and every outlet secured without having air gaps or spaces.

The foam you spray to fill the gaps, no matter how careful, oozes out, creates a mess, and creates another job.

All of the boards that I’m hanging were rough cut and need to be straightened.

Everything takes an exorbitant amount of time.

I wanted to yell at the world and be frustrated, but the universe wouldn’t care.

So instead, I’m diving in and using each case as a meditative exercise, enjoying my time with the materials and the process, knowing that the end result will be a remarkably quiet and stable room and that it will be done right.

This extends into everything we do in our lives.

Shouting at the world has never done me any good because the universe simply doesn’t care.
