Hidden Tension

“Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is relax” — Mark Black

The Obstacle

We hold tension in our hearts, minds, and bodies.

Most of the day, we are distracted and don’t notice this tension.

It rides with us like an uninvited passenger.

Tension takes up energy and reduces our performance. It wears on our nerves, adds stress, and shows up in conversations and relationships.

Sometimes tension is obvious: a pain in the neck, back, shoulder, or somewhere in the body.

Other times it hides in the shadows, unnoticed.

The Gift And Opportunity

Tension is always there.

It’s a matter of finding it.

We can take time each morning and throughout the day to hone in, find the tension, and focus on it.

We can feel the tension. Concentrate on it. Identify the source. Work on relieving it.

When we do this, we carry less with us and are better able to put our attention where it matters.

We can perform better, carry less stress, and show up fuller in conversations and relationships.

The Practice Of Self-Mastery

• Notice the tension

• Hone in

• Identify the source

• Relieve what we can

CHEAT CODE: NOTICE → HONE IN → IDENTIFY THE SOURCE → RELIEVE WHAT WE CAN

The Why

I have an injured shoulder, and that takes up a lot of my concentration, distracting from tensions I may have elsewhere.

A pain in my back, neck, or somewhere else in my body goes unnoticed and untreated.

When I’m able to pause now and then, close my eyes, and search past the shoulder, I’m able to find other areas that are holding me back and work those out.

It doesn’t sound like a lot, but when my attention is divided by unresolved tension, it pulls me away from where I am on a subconscious level.

Today I was able to work out some other areas of my body that have been neglected from not noticing, and from the pain my shoulder gives me on a constant basis.

I feel less distracted and less irritable when I’m carrying less tension.
