Persevere
“He who suffers before it is necessary suffers more than is necessary” — Seneca

The Obstacle
Some days are overflowing.
It can seem there’s not enough time to get everything done.
Commitments stack up.
Decisions need to be made.
Sacrifice happens.
It’s difficult not to get frustrated or overwhelmed.
We can find ourselves irritated, chippy, and unable to bring our best selves to each moment because of the weight.
Looking at the big picture can pull us away from performing each individual task well.
Being on edge and frustrated damages our relationships.
We walk through the day stressed out, overwhelmed, underperforming, and not fun to be around.
The Gift And Opportunity
There’s only so many hours in the day, and only so much can get done.
We can focus on the most important things and do those with all of our energy, one by one.
We cannot look ahead at everything we’re unable to do.
We need to focus on what we are able to do.
We can pour our energy and attention into the things we can manage while letting go of the rest.
We don’t need to be frustrated or overwhelmed.
We don’t need to make others around us miserable when we’re unable to cope.
We just need to take one bite at a time and persevere.
The Practice Of Self-Mastery
• Focus on what’s most important
• Take one bite at a time
• Pour energy into what can be managed
• Let go of the rest
CHEAT CODE: FOCUS → ONE BITE → POUR ENERGY → LET GO
The Why
Summer can get very busy with the kids home, running a business, and trying to manage all of their practices, camps, and activities.
It’s hard to maintain focus and not become frustrated at everything that gets left off the plate.
It’s easy to start blaming others and expecting them to do more.
I can find myself falling into the victim role, wondering why I have to do so much and why there isn’t enough help or time to go around.
This doesn’t help me perform better or do the tasks that I am able to do.
It doesn’t help me be the man that I want to be.
It doesn’t help others when I am short, frustrated, or irritable.
I can take things one task at a time and give my all to them while not adding additional suffering to myself or those around me.
I need to stop complaining, start doing, and persevere through the day.
