Appreciate

“Do not act as if you had ten thousand years to throw away. Death stands at your elbow” — Marcus Aurelius

The Obstacle

We go through our days locked in, focused on all we need to accomplish, what’s in front of us, what’s in the way, what’s holding us back, and how to move forward.

We don’t take into account all the stuff we’re missing, or the things that we should be appreciative of.

We can see good things as obstacles.

We can see things we would enjoy as frustrations that are barriers in the way of what we should be doing.

We can let emotions run negative and keep us in a state of stress, anxiety, fear, frustration, and resentment.

We can feel guilt for not doing enough or not doing the things that we should.

We can forget to appreciate.

The Gift And Opportunity

We can schedule time in our day.

I mean that quite literally.

We can take time and schedule it into our calendar, on our watch, or on our phone. A reminder to pause, take a look around, and see what there is to appreciate.

We can take the time to enjoy the things that only take a minute: to view something of beauty, listen to something pleasing, actually taste our food and coffee, and enjoy the company that we’re with, even if it comes as a distraction.

A well-spent minute is worth far more than the time it takes, especially when we’re just looking to escape and get back to what we were doing.

We can take the time to appreciate.

The Practice Of Self-Mastery

• Schedule time to pause

• Take a look around

• Notice what there is to appreciate

• Take the well-spent minute

CHEAT CODE: PAUSE → LOOK AROUND → APPRECIATE → TAKE THE MINUTE

The Why

Mondays come fast and hard.

They hit quickly, and there is a lot left over from the week before or the weekend.

I find myself rushing into the daily pace of getting everything set for the week.

These are the final days of summer, and my kids are still in the house, so it’s easy to dismiss them and get after what I feel like I should be doing.

In just a few short weeks, they’ll be gone again for another school year, and many hours will be quiet without their energy and love.

My son just wanted some attention today because his sister was off doing something else.

I found myself frustrated that he was in my way.

I took the time to realize that he is the most important thing in my life.

In just a short time, he’ll be back in school, and I won’t have that opportunity to stop what I’m doing and play fight with him or go outside and throw the ball for a couple of minutes here and there.

It’s okay that some things get put on the back burner so that he and I can spend time together.

I won’t look back at the end of my life and wish that I had gotten more done that day.

I would look back and wish that I’d taken the time to play ball with him.
