You’re Not Good At A Lot Of Things

“Do not waste what remains of your life in speculating about others, unless it is to some mutual benefit.” — Marcus Aurelius

The Obstacle

You’re not good at a lot of things.
Neither am I
No one is…

All of us are really good at a few things
And decent at a whole lot more.

We are specialists
We can’t be good at everything.

We were born with certain
Genes
Traits
Body types
Intelligence
Natural abilities.

We grew up learning certain
Sports
Activities
Skills
Knowledge.

Raised in particular environments
With different
Teachers
Motivations
Dreams.

Each of ours were different
So what we are good at is different.

We look around us.
We see what others are good at
We scroll social media
And compare.
We see our deficiencies.

What we don’t see
are the things they are not good at
all the things they struggle with
Their deficiencies
Because we are focused on what we’re lacking.

What we’re not good at.

The Gift and Opportunity

We are really good at some things.
Yet we compare ourselves to others.

They are good at some things
Yet they compare themselves to us.

We focus on what we lack
And what they have.

They focus on what they lack
And what we have.

The girl with curly hair
Wants straight hair
The super fast kid
Wants strength
The artist
Wants math skills
The guitarist
Wishes they were good at football.

And so it goes.

They don’t see our insecurities
Just as we overlook theirs.

We slowly built our skills
When no one was looking
Cultivating
Focusing
Interested
Struggling
Failing
Explorating.

They did the same.

We are not born with skills
We make them.

When we find ourselves wanting for what we lack
Refocus that energy
Attention
Emotion
On what we’re already good at.
Or
Use that energy and attention
To build new skills
Understanding we’re going to be bad
Before we are good.

You are bad at a lot of things.
We all are.

Remember what you are good at.

The Practice of Self-Mastery

  • Notice comparison

  • Remember what you are good at

  • Invest attention in what you already do well

  • Choose a new skill and stay with it through struggle

CHEAT CODE: NOTICE COMPARISON  → RECALIBRATE THE ENERGY
