Thinking Makes It So

“There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.” — William Shakespeare

The Obstacle

Nature is nature. What is, is.

We humans are the only species on earth that we know of that put our perceptions, judgments, and thoughts into what happens.

We shape these events as good or bad, but it is our thinking that makes it so.

We struggle to get past events that don’t go our way.

We have difficulty with people who do not act how we think they should.

We go through life struggling to be happy because of the conditions that we put on circumstances, events, relationships, and ourselves.

The universe, nature, and the world do not see things as good and evil because they do not have perceptions.

We make these in our own minds.

The Gift And Opportunity

Self-fulfilling prophecies are a thing.

Oftentimes, we deem things as bad.

But are they really?

It is in our power to view things in any manner we deem fit.

A simple shift can change the narrative from good to bad, or bad to good.

Even if it’s not good or bad, we can leave it as neutral and have no opinion of the matter itself.

We do not need to make things harder, more difficult, or more painful than they are.

We can simply see things for what they are.

It is our thinking that makes it so.

The Practice Of Self-Mastery

• Notice the judgment

• Question the narrative

• Leave it neutral

• See things for what they are

CHEAT CODE: NOTICE → QUESTION THE NARRATIVE → LEAVE IT NEUTRAL → SEE WHAT IS

The Why

I’m a people watcher.

I listen, observe, and note how events, conversations, and relationships unfold in life.

It is interesting to watch the same event viewed by two people as good or bad.

It can be neither, it can be either, or it can be both.

In Shakespeare’s Hamlet, he wrote, “There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.”

This was true in Shakespeare’s time, just as it is true in our time.

I try to not let things be bad when they need not be.

I try not to add my own misery to something that isn’t going how I wished it would.

Life can be much easier to navigate, and I can be much happier when this practice is exercised.

Especially in difficult circumstances and with difficult people.
