Slow Down Often
“Adopt the pace of nature Her secret is patience." — Ralph Waldo Emerson

The Obstacle
We rush from one thing to another all day, every day, for our entire lives.
We rush from the time we wake up to the time we go to bed, pushing from one task to another, tackling each thing as it comes.
We rush through conversations, problem-solving, and conflict, letting preconceived notions, assumptions, and autopilot guide us.
We push past feelings, curiosity, and intuition straight into action.
We forget to understand each other and make real connections.
We simply do formalities.
We ask things like, “Was your day good?” or “How are you doing?” without actually caring about the answer.
We rush past all the wonderful little things the universe has to show us without taking the time to notice.
We miss out on conversation, connection, beauty, and all the little things that make life special and interesting.
The Gift And Opportunity
We can slow down now and then.
In the middle of a task, we can pause and see what we might be missing.
During a conversation, we can remind ourselves that if we lean in and take some extra moments, we’ll connect and understand each other better.
During transition times, like the walk from the car to the store, into the house, or over a field of grass, we can pause, look around, and see what we’re missing.
If we slow down, there’s much to learn about one another and connections to be made that we might have missed.
When we take our time enjoying nature or our surroundings, we notice many things we may not have seen.
We can slow down and take time to soak it all in.
The Practice Of Self-Mastery
• Pause in the middle of a task
• Lean in during conversation
• Look around during transition times
• Take a small reset
CHEAT CODE: PAUSE → LEAN IN → LOOK AROUND → RESET
The Why
I have a tendency to be in a hurry.
Everywhere I go and everything that I’m doing can turn into a rush unless I’m conscious of it.
When I’m in a hurry, I not only miss things, but I’m also more likely to become agitated and frustrated.
When I rush through conversations, people know that I’m only interested in getting what I need and then moving on.
When I push from one place to another, I miss the entire journey and what’s in between.
When I’m able to really slow down and take the time, I learn more about people and problems, and I understand the full picture better.
That puts me in a better position to help and be part of solving.
When I slow down during tasks, I’ll see things that I might be missing, be able to add detail, or refocus my energy on places where it matters, and not simply perfect for the sake of perfecting.
When I take the time between physical places, I’ll notice the beauty around me, the insects on the ground, the movement and sound of the leaves, the formations of the clouds, and the smells that I would have just brushed past.
Everything in life becomes richer, more enjoyable, and more beautiful when I can simply slow down.
