Look In (Like Shouting, “LOOK OUT”)

“The present moment is filled with joy and happiness. If you are attentive, you will see it” — Thich Nhat Hanh

The Obstacle

We run on autopilot, moving from one task to another, reacting our way through every stimulus life brings our way.

We halfway engage in conversations for pleasantries, void of curiosity.

Our mood goes unnoticed unless it is too far in one direction or the other to ignore.

We can have a low level of irritation, annoyance, frustration, and impatience running as a background process all day, most days.

It’s difficult to perform our best when we’re feeling like we want to avoid, control, or when we’re frustrated, irritated, and annoyed with what we’re doing.

It’s hard to have meaningful conversations and connections with people when our energy is frustration or negativity.

Without looking in, it’s impossible to recognize how we’re feeling in the background.

The Gift And Opportunity

We can choose to find the good in all things.

We can choose to let go of our judgment and opinions on most matters, events, circumstances, and people.

We can choose to be curious when talking to someone and go deeper than the surface pleasantries.

We can choose to tell ourselves that where we are is exactly where we should be and not wish to be somewhere else, doing something else, with someone else.

We can choose to check in on our mood, attitude, and emotions, and shift them when they’re dragging us, others, and our performance down.

We can choose to look in and recalibrate.

The Practice Of Self-Mastery

• Look in… often

• Check the default mood

• Let go of judgment and opinion

• Recalibrate mood, emotions, and attitude

CHEAT CODE: LOOK IN → CHECK THE MOOD → LET GO → RECALIBRATE

The Why

I go day to day doing the things that need to get done.

Some days can feel heavier and more stressful than others.

Sometimes things just stack up, and there’s more to do.

When there’s more weight, there’s more of a tendency to be frustrated.

I have a lot to do right now with home projects, building a few walls, finishing construction, making wood look antiqued to match what’s in my vision, mowing the lawn, and taking care of the cabin.

My pool cover just died.

I have to custom cut and attach it.

Both the kids are sick.

Little league to coach.

A shoulder to rehab.

There’s a lot of weight on the bar, and it can easily get frustrating if I allow it.

So I’ll check in, and check in often, to make sure my default mood doesn’t drift into the negative because I know it won’t help me enjoy where I am.

It certainly won’t make others want to be around me.

It won’t help me perform, focus, or knock these tasks out as quickly as possible.

So I’m going to check in often and make sure to recalibrate my emotions, mood, and attitude toward something more positive.
