Take A Good Look

“The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes” — Marcel Proust

The Obstacle

We rush through our day, moving from one thing to the next.

Our eyes sweep across the landscape, the things in it, and the people around us, without taking notice.

We’ve seen it all before, so we miss the detail.

We assume, not just with our mind, but with our eyes.

We assume people look the same, all the plants and animals are the same, and everything we encounter on a daily basis is the same as it was yesterday.

We miss the details, nuances, and changes that are happening right before our eyes because we don’t take the time to take a good look.

The Gift And Opportunity

The only thing constant in life is change.

Nothing is ever the same as it was.

There are always new details to be noticed.

Something changes every day about everything.

We can take the time to focus in and really look at the things we take for granted.

We can find what we might have missed or what might have changed.

Bringing our world into greater detail and clarity allows us to appreciate the richness and fullness that our eyes generally sweep over.

The Practice Of Self-Mastery

• Focus in

• Really look

• Notice what has changed

• Appreciate the richness and fullness

CHEAT CODE: FOCUS IN → REALLY LOOK → NOTICE CHANGE → APPRECIATE WHAT’S THERE

The Why

I rush around most days, my eyes sweeping over everything in the house, in the yard, while driving, and while having conversations.

I assume things are the same as they were, but they’re not.

The trees’ leaves are changing.

The grass is growing.

Water levels are rising and falling.

Animals are shedding their summer coats, thinning out for fall to prepare for winter.

The people in my life are changing and getting older.

There’s so much to notice.

When I set time out of my day to focus in and intentionally take in the detail, I’m reminded that there are several layers of clarity deeper than what I normally allow myself to see.

If I just take the time to take a good look.
